This study is started from the Yao Yuanming’s poetry of 「drinking」. I couldn’t believe the phrase ‘secluded himself in village’ and ‘I have drifted apart’. I actually surveyed where they lived, from where their feel moved away, and to where pay attention. In this way, I tried to clarify the status and interests of the recluse in the period of the Wei-Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties. Their recess is in village, also in the mountain. But whichever It connected with people. They did not hide and were not disconnected. The recluse was distracted from society. But it does not mean they stop paying attention to society.
They educated their students and were active in writing and the commoner was exchanged. In short, The recluse lived in connection with people, and were interested in social improving. This means that the recluse is a social being. The identity of recluse should also be judged from a social point of view. In this regard, there are two characteristics to the recluse. First, They were from a prestigious family. Second, Intellectuals and commoners followed them. From this characteristics, We can judge the recluse are the head of local forces.
