The present research examined the intervening factors in the relationship between SNS use and life satisfaction. Drawing upon social comparison theory, SNS was expected to increase upward social comparison, which would lead to a stronger sense of relative deprivation. This study also predicted that relative deprivation would make SNS users underestimate their economic status measured as the gap between objective and subjective economic status, which might ultimately deteriorates life satisfaction. Analyses of online survey collected from 936 SNS users in Korea confirmed that the more people use SNS, the more upward comparison they experienced. The upward social comparison also increased relative deprivation, led to underestimation of their economic status in Korean society. Both relative deprivation and the underestimation of economic status abated individuals’ life satisfaction. Implications of the findings were discussed in Korean context wherein economic inequality becomes a growing social concern.
