The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the perception of death, which is a parameter when the intrinsic-extrinsic religious orientation affects the subjects’ views on meaning of life and thus their psychological well-being. The subjects of this study were 400 college students, and they answered questionnaires designed to measure their religiosity, perception of death, views on meaning of life, and psychological well-being.
The results of the study are as follows:
First, intrinsic-religion orientation, regardless of external-religion orientation, had a statistically significant effect on the recognition of death. External-religion orientation did not pay attention to the recognition of death.
Second, intrinsic-religion orientation had a statistically significant effect on views on the meaning of life and psychological well-being. As for the external-religion orientation, religiosity had no significant effect on the view on meaning of life, and had a significant negative effect on psychological well-being.
Third, the recognition of death had a statistically significant effect on the view of meaning of life and psychological well-being.
Fourth, intrinsic-religion orientation affects the meaning of life and psychological well-being, which are subordinate variables. The recognition of death showed partial mediation effect. In other words, intrinsic-religion orientation influences the subject’s view on meaning of life through the recognition of death.
These results suggest the importance of religious education in establishing intrinsic-religion orientation and developing educational programs for appropriate recognition of the reality of death.
