How to Translate 'Contemporary art' into Korean?

This paper aims to advance discussions on a proper Korean translation of ‘Contemporary art’ (hereafter Ca) by recognizing two premises based upon the current discourses on Ca. The first is that one shall have to deal with Modern art (hereafter Ma) and Ca as stylistically opposed to each other. The second is that if one named ‘x’ in Korean such a style of art belonging to Ma in the 20th century Korean art, one should not call ‘x’ such a style of art belonging to Ca. In this context, this paper seeks to provide useful data whereby to examine the validity of ‘hyundae misul’ and ‘dongshidae misul’ as a proper Korean transition of Ca, by demonstrating that Ca had replaced art-historically Ma in that the former deals with contemporary problems by means of its conceptual approach, and by recognizing that Japan and China translate Ma and Ca into ‘kindai bijutsu’ and ‘gendai bijutsu,’ and ‘xiandai yishu’ and ‘dangdai yishu’ respectively. Then, this paper proposes that there are ‘hyundae misul’ and ‘dongshidae misul’ as two candidates for a proper Korean translation of Ca, provided that the former choice demands that one translate Ma as ‘kundae misul’ while the latter choice demands that one translate Ma as ‘hyundae misul,’ leaving the question of which would be better to Korean art historians.

본 논문의 목적은 ‘1989년 이후 컨템퍼러리 아트의 담론’에 의거해 두 가지 명제를 확인함으로써 적절한 컨템퍼러리 아트 (이하 Ca)의 번역어를 모색하기 위한 논의를 개진하는 데 있다. 첫째는 개념적, 비판적 Ca가 시각적, 심미적 모던 아트 (이하 Ma)를 역사적으로 대체했다는 관점에서 Ca와 Ma는 연대기적, 양식적으로 서로 대립하는 미술개념으로 다뤄져야 한다는 것이고, 둘째는 20세기 한국미술의 흐름에서 Ma에 준하는 미술양식을 x로 지칭했다면 Ca 계열의 미술은 더 이상 x로 불러서는 안된다는 것과 마찬가지로 20세기 한국미술사를 영어로 소개할 때도 Ma에 준하는 미술과 Ca 계열의 미술을 용어상 구분해야 한다는 것이다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 논문은 Ca의 번역어의 후보로 거론될 수 있는 ‘현대미술,’ ‘현대예술,’ ‘동시대미술,’ ‘동시대예술’ 등의 타당성을 검토하기 위해, 첫째 Ca는 개념주의 미술, 탈구조주의, 탈식민주의의 맥락에서 동시대의 문제를 비판적으로 다루는 미술이라는 관점에서 (사회와의 분리를 주창한 형식주의 계열의) Ma를 미술사적으로 완전히 대체하게 되었음을 논증하고, 둘째, 한국과 한자문화를 공유하는 일본과 중국이 각각 상이한 정치적, 역사적 조건하에서 Ma와 Ca를 ‘킨다이 비주츠’와 ‘겐다이 비주츠,’ ‘셴다이 이수’와 ‘당다이 이수’로 구분 번역하고 있음을 확인함으로써 (본 논제를 논의하기 위한) 유용한 비교논거를 마련한다. 논문은 이를 바탕으로 Ca의 번역의 유력한 후보로 ‘현대미술’과 ‘동시대미술’이 있음을 확인한 뒤 - 어느 것이 보다 적절한 것인가는 학술적 논의의 문제로 남기는 가운데 - 전자의 선택은 Ma를 ‘근대미술’로 후자의 선택은 Ma를 ‘현대미술’로 번역할 것을 전제한다고 결론짓는다.
