Purpose: Expression pattern is a chunk, combining lexeme and tagmeme. It acts as a syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic function, and is considered to improve communication ability. The purpose of this study is to investigate types and tokens of expression patterns in speech corpus of 3-5 year old children. Methods: The utterances of 3 hours from 30 three to five-year-old children, 10 children from each age group, were selected from the Nazarene spoken language corpus. The list of expression patterns used in this study have 171 types, which was modified and supplemented by referring to the list of expression patterns of Jang(2014) and Chung (2015). To normalize frequencies, token of expression pattern per 1000 utterances are calculated. ANOVA and Turkey HSD(Honestly Significant Differences) were conducted to find out the difference of types and tokens of expression patterns by age. Results: The types and tokens of expression pattern per 1000 utterances increased with age, and there are a statistically significant difference. Conclusions: The results of this study showed the use of expression patterns in early language development and are expected to use them as basic data for diagnosis and intervention of language disorders.
