Research of Death is life. 'Life and Death' is the important topic, because birth is not have something to do with the will but death is related to it. Generally a good death is conclusion of a good life. One person do one's best for a good life but one's death is not always happy. For example, one's death is unfair or victimized. In case of these death, how can we comport the death? Who has responsibility for the death? This paper focused on Confucian understanding of death in the Joseon Dynasty. Confucian understanding of death is a shared value system and lifestyle in East Asia's tradition. Especially 'ancestral rites' is a important clue for understanding of death in the Joseon Dynasty. Understanding a ghost is understanding for 'ancestral rites'. East asians believe once people die, they become a ghost. How distinguish Life and Death? Living descendants perform ancestral rites, pay respects, and ancestors ghosts come back their home in Confucian philosophy. Descendants live an honest life, walk with God and put life into their ancestral rites, then ancestors will answer the devotion. This response is a final goal of filially. When behave filially, the moral society is realized in Confucianism. We have to arrange ways of approach to Confucian death, because it is our traditional values and it can give more fundamental meanings of life in nowadays.

죽음 연구는 삶에 대한 연구이다. ‘生死’라는 주제가 중요한 이유는, 태어남은 본인의 의지와 관계없지만, 죽음에는 본인의 의지가 작용하기 때문이다. 좋은 죽음은 곧 좋은 삶의 결과일 것이다. 하지만, 개인은 좋은 삶을 살기 위하여 노력하였지만, 어쩔 수 없이 죽을 수밖에 없는 죽음, 억울하고 불쌍한 죽음, 천수를 다하지 못하는 죽음이 있다. 이런 경우 그 죽음에 대하여 살아있는 자들은 어떻게 죽은 자를 위로해야 하는 것일까? 그 죽음에 대한 책임이 누구에게 있는 것일까? 본고는 이런 문제의식에서 조선시대의 죽음이해를 고찰하였다. 유교적 죽음 개념은 동아시아 전통의 토대를 이루고 있는 공통의 가치체계이며, 삶의 방식이다. 특히 조선의 죽음론을 이해하는 데 있어서는 ‘제사’가 중요한 단서가 된다. ‘제사’의 의미를 이해하기 위해서는 제사의 대상이 되는 鬼神의 개념을 정리할 필요가 있다. 사람이 죽으면 귀신이 된다는 귀신론에서 볼 때, 生死란 어떻게 구별되는 것인가? 하는 문제들을 살펴 볼 필요성이 생긴다. 유교철학에서는 죽은 선조의 귀신은 살아있는 후손의 정성으로 자기가 살던 집에 돌아와서 제사를 흠향한다고 믿었다. 산사람이 바르게 성실하게 살면서 정성으로 제사를 받들면, 죽은 조상은 그 정성에 ‘感應’한다는 것이다. 이 감응이 바로 효도의 목표라고도 할 수 있을 것이다. 효도의 실천에 의하여 유교가 실현하고자 하는 도덕사회가 구현된다고 보았다. 우리의 전통적 가치관의 근거가 되었던 유교적 죽음이해에 대한 정리를 통하여, 현대를 사는 우리는 보다 근본적인 인생의 의미에 대해 생각해 보아야 할 것이다.
