A Study of Japanese Bureaucrats in the Government-General of Korea* Ahn, Yong-Sik․Oh, Yeon-Sook․Oh, Seung-Eun․Won, Gu-Hwan․Song, Hae-Kyung** This paper focused its research on the social background of Japanese bureaucrats in the Japanese Government-General of Korea. The subject bureaucrats were the governor-general, administrative superintendent, headquarters director, senior judges, provincial governors, and regular bureaucrats. As for their social background, their place of birth, education, specialization in university, age of appointment, previous employment, duration of service, and employment after service were all closely examined. The results of this examination were then compared to the social backgrounds of senior bureaucrats in other Japanese colonial areas, at the Japanese Government-General of Taiwanese, Guandong Office, Sakhalin Office, and Namyang Office. The findings indicate that the bureaucrats serving at the Japanese Government-General of Korea not only had a different social background from those of the bureaucrats serving in other Japanese colonial areas, but also were recognized as special and treated differently.
