Yongseong(龍城), one of the representative Seon(禪) masters of modern Buddhism, emphasized Daegak(大覺) thought and established the theory and practiced it in reality. Daegak means beopseong(法性), jeonggak(正覺), and the Buddha. In this article, I focused on Beopseong and searched for life and death perspectives of Daegak Thought. First, I looked at Daegak's definition of death. In Daegak Thought, death is defined as the separation of the hun-p'o(魂魄) by a view of Confucianism, including the halting of the physical function of breathing arrest and the collapse of sadae(四大). However, Yongseong defines death as taking the two dimensions of saengmyeolsim(生滅心) and jinmyeongsim(眞明心) and denies both of annihilationism(uccheda-vādin) and eternalism(śāśvata-vāda) so that the body is born or disappears but jinmyeongsim is not. Second, I looked at the background of life and death by looking at Daegak Thought's reincarnation, and the inheritance process after birth. Yongseong says that reincarnation occurs because of karma, and that the endogenous life can be understood through the action of body temperature and vijñāna. He explains that if body temperature goes down and disappears, it is born in evil destinies, when body temperature rises and disappears, it is born in good destinies, but vijñāna acts in the flow of body temperature. He said, when the body is destroyed in the process of inheriting life after death, jeongmyosaekgeun(淨妙色根) becomes the foundation of inheritance, and based on ālayavijñāna, the seed of good and evil is ripe and antarā-bhava inherits with seeds. However, Yongseong emphasizes that such processes are vanity in the ultimate view of Daegak and ultimately the function of avidyā. Finally, I searched Daegak thought's perspective on the solution of death in theory and practice. Yongseong points out that the cause of birth and death is karma caused by habits, and the power of karma arises from avidyā. He explains the working principle of avidyā through Dasheng qixinlun(大乘起信論), and says that he must go beyond avidyā and into the world of Daegak without death. The practical aspect is centered on Yongseong's book, Imjonggyeol(臨終訣), which says that everyday practices exert their power when dying. Also, Yongseong said that through karma's power of practices, we could get nirvāna from life and death if we faced the causes of various appearances at the moment of dying. Lastly, he said that even if one did not achieve enlightenment before one’s death, the power of practices will be manifested at the time of dying, and it is also the driving force behind achieving enlightenment after death.
