Korean non-native speakers(KNNS) will find their way through communication in a multilingual society like Korea using Korean or English as a contact language. Korean native speakers(KNS) will also try to understand KNNS utterance by employing their language resources to infer or other available methods to continue the communication. This study looks into the types of interaction strategies between KNS and KNNS to continue conversations in contacts by analyzing eight different Korean TV shows(58 episodes).
The types of interaction strategies were inductively collected from transcription data of TV shows based on prior researches, then re-categorized depending on “the abundancy of language resources.” Under abundant language resources, common strategies include “Relying on the meaning” and “Relying on the conversation participant.” Under insufficient language resources, the strategies can be re-divided depending on the situation; when the speaker needs to deliver a message, or when the speaker did not understand the message from conversation participant. The strategies in trying to deliver a message are categorized as “utilizing common language resource,” “utilizing non-common language resource,” and “utilizing nonverbal resource.” The strategies in trying to understand the participant’s message are categorized into “let-it-pass” and “negotiating the meanings.”
Studying the conversation cases of each interaction strategies, the question “Should speaking accurate Korean be essential to a successful interaction?” answers itself “No.” Language is constantly changing by those who use it, and Korean speakers constantly change Korean. So far as Korean speakers are not limited to its natives, the KNNS within the community will contribute to the dynamics and diversity of the Korean language. This study tries to propose a paradigm-shift from the former perspective of monolingualism to multilingualism, and suggest Korea’s facets as a multilingual society. The core of this study lies in trying to understand the utterance of KNNS as an effort towards a successful interaction using each speaker’s available language resource, rather than an object of correction or deficiency.
