This study investigated the effects of changes in media usage time of elementary 1st to 3rd graders on children’s media addiction and school adaptation. For longitudinal analyses, this study analyzed the 8th (2015) and 10th (2017) Panel Study on Korean Children Survey conducted by Korea Institute of Child Care and Education and explored the structure model between variables.
The results were as follows. First, 1st graders showed individual differences in the media usage time. While the media usage time continuously increased for 3 years, individual differences in the media usage time did not change. Second, the initial value and change rate in the media usage time had a significant effect on the media addiction. In other words, children with high media usage time in the early stage showed higher media addiction, and children who showed higher increase in media usage time for 3 years showed higher media addiction. Third, the change rate in media usage time had a significant effect on school adaptation. That is, children who showed higher increase in media usage time for 3 years showed higher difficulty in adapting to the school in the 3rd grade.
This study investigated the changes in the media usage time of children, and revealed that media usage time had effects on the media addiction and school adaptation. This study suggests the needs for continuous attention on changes in the media usage time of children and variables related to intervention on the media usage time. This study also suggests the needs for additional research on developing efficient methods for preventing media addiction and helping school adaptation.
