This study investigated the effects of changes in media usage time of elementary 1st to 3rd graders on children’s media addiction and school adaptation. For longitudinal analyses, this study analyzed the 8th (2015) and 10th (2017) Panel Study on Korean Children Survey conducted by Korea Institute of Child Care and Education and explored the structure model between variables.
The results were as follows. First, 1st graders showed individual differences in the media usage time. While the media usage time continuously increased for 3 years, individual differences in the media usage time did not change. Second, the initial value and change rate in the media usage time had a significant effect on the media addiction. In other words, children with high media usage time in the early stage showed higher media addiction, and children who showed higher increase in media usage time for 3 years showed higher media addiction. Third, the change rate in media usage time had a significant effect on school adaptation. That is, children who showed higher increase in media usage time for 3 years showed higher difficulty in adapting to the school in the 3rd grade.
This study investigated the changes in the media usage time of children, and revealed that media usage time had effects on the media addiction and school adaptation. This study suggests the needs for continuous attention on changes in the media usage time of children and variables related to intervention on the media usage time. This study also suggests the needs for additional research on developing efficient methods for preventing media addiction and helping school adaptation.

본 연구의 목적은 아동의 미디어 이용시간 변화를 살펴보고, 아동의 개인 간 차이 외에 개인 내 변화를 통해 미디어 이용시간의 개인 내적 변화가 이후 미디어중독과 학교적응에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 살펴보는 것이었다. 이를 위해 육아정책연구소에서 수행한 한국아동패널 조사의 8차연도(2015년)에서 10차연도(2017년) 자료를 활용하여 변인 간 구조모형을 검증해 보았다.
연구결과 첫째, 초등 1학년 아동의 미디어 이용시간 수준(초기치)은 아동들 간 개인차가 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 아동의 3년간 미디어 이용시간은 지속적으로 증가하였으나 변화율에 대한 개인적인 차이는 보이지 않았다. 둘째, 미디어 이용시간 초기치와 변화율은 미디어중독에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나, 초기 미디어 이용시간 수준이 높은 아동은 미디어중독 수준도 높았고, 학년이 올라감에 따라 미디어 이용시간이 유의하게 증가하는 아동은 높은 미디어중독 경향을 보였다. 셋째, 미디어 이용시간의 변화는 학교적응에 영향을 미쳤는데, 학년이 올라감에 따라 미디어 이용시간이 유의하게 증가한 아동은 초등 3학년 학교적응에 어려움을 보였다.
본 연구는 아동기 미디어 이용시간의 변화를 추적하고 아동기 미디어 이용시간의 개인 내적 속성이 미디어중독과 학교적응에 영향을 미치고 있음을 밝혔다는데 의의가 있다. 본 연구를 통해 아동기 미디어의 효율적인 사용을 위해서 미디어 이용시간 추이 및 이의 중재와 관련한 변인에 대한 지속적인 관심, 그리고 미디어중독예방과 학교적응을 돕기 위한 후속 연구의 필요성을 제안한다.
