The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of student participation on academic achievement using the Hierarchical Linear Model(HLM), using the data on the current status and its level of schooling in Korea surveyed by the Korea Educational Development Institute Respectively. The final analysis target is 10,310 students attending 161 general high schools nationwide. The results of the study are as follows. First, the results of analyzing the within-school model showed that the results of the analysis of Korean language achievement and mathematics achievement model showed that the students" gender, previous school grade, level of participation in private education, attendance after school, parental expectations, teacher support, and student engagement were statistically significant. Second, the results of analyzing the between-school model suggest that variables such as school average SES and school average student engagement can be suggested as school-level variables that affect Korean language achievement and mathematics achievement. In this study, student engagement in Korean language, student engagement in mathematics, student engagement in average Korean language, and student engagement school average mathematics were found statistically significant in Korean language achievement and mathematics achievement. The importance of student engagement has been demonstrated empirically. Finally, based on the results of this study, suggestions for the direction of policy establishment and follow-up study were suggested.
