This article examines the social institutional aspects of the instrument-making organization in the Joseon Dynasty. In the Joseon Dynasty, musical instruments were an essential element to observe the five rituals and perform ceremonial music. In terms of the music-history, it is meaningful to find out the conditions and procedures for the production of musical instruments in the Joseon Dynasty. The note names, scales, installations, and organization charts of the instrument-making organization in the Joseon Dynasty were examined through historical records such as the Annals and Uigwe. The name of the instrument-making organization was closely related to the institution of the temporary organization in the Joseon Dynasty. Until the early Joseon Dynasty, it appeared in various ways depending on Dogam(都監), So(所), Sack(色), and Cheong(廳), and this is closely related to the scale of the ministry. In the late 17th century, as the character of Dogam was set as handling important ceremonial matters in terms of the scale of ministry as well as symbolism, the name of the instrument-making organization was changed to Cheong. The instrument-making organization was a temporary organization, established with the permission of the king at the request of the Jangakwon(掌樂院), Yejo(禮曺), etc. According to the character of the ministry, the organization is divided into the provincial Docheong(都廳), Byeolgongjac(別工作), Joseongso(造成所). The entire ministry was carried out in an organic relationship with each administration, supporting business, and musical instrument production. In this paper, the existence of musical instrument production organization in the Joseon Dynasty was investigated, and detailed review of its size, name, organization, and function was conducted. Based on this, it is expected to be a broader historical study that reveals the theme and manufacturing process of the instrument in the future, going further from the discussion that has focused only on the instrument itself.
