Recently, diffusion of telematics service and explosive increase of using in-vehicle display device such as CNS (Car Navigation System) are becoming the new causes of traffic accidents during driving. This is caused by ‘Inattention’ from increase of driver’s mental workload while he/she is driving. The driver of a vehicle (except for emergency or police vehicles) must not use a hand-held mobile phone while the vehicle is moving. Australia, England, Italy, Brazil and in some states of the US bans on hand held mobile have also been enforced. However, there are not any prohibitions for the use of in-vehicle displays and regulations in relation to its correct positions. We need to study how much the position of navigation affects driver distraction while driving through the objective assessment about the position of navigation. Some existing research reports that in-vehicle distraction not only leads to reduce speed and increase lane keeping variation but also tend to increase driver gaze to the centre of the road. In this study, in order to develop the assessment method and propose the proper position of CNS, the experiment is carried out in the driving simulator environment. Divers gaze tracking method and physiological sensing method are used for the HMI(Human-Machine Interface) assessment. The experiment is carried out in a driving simulator observing the glancing distribution according to the position of navigation while driving. Fourteen subjects participated in this experiment. Changes in organism signal and rates of glancing distribution were collected.
