This thesis analyzes Don DeLillo’s White Noise through Zygmunt Bauman’s perspective of the post-modern society. With the backdrop of middle-class American family in the 1980s, Jack Gladney, protagonist of the novel, is terrified with death even though he has a stable life. By shopping, he doesn’t only try to escape the fear of death but also receives stability, satisfaction, and family bond. In White Noise, the fear of death threaten his existence and the shopping center serve as a refuge for him from the threat. Also both of them are closely related to his identity. Gladney is a kind of the individual ‘afloat’ in the post-modernity, which Bauman named ‘Liquid Modern.’ It is by shopping that he temporarily forgets about various anxiety and fear of the unpredictable future and death, and furthermore is deluded to fulfill himself. He is a typical example of ‘consumer"s fantasy.’ Individuals in the Liquid Modern can not live without the lifestyle of a consumer. People shop from start to finish both at the beginning and the end of White Noise. Gladney’s view on death, however, has been changed. He acknowledges that to go shopping is no longer the ultimate way to get rid of the fear on death. After suffering from The Airborne Toxic Event and witnessing son"s bike ride, he learns how to live with death which doesn"t only exist in the shopping center but also is in our daily lives as in ‘white noise.’
