The purpose of this study is to compare the characteristics of consumers who have experience of direct foreign purchase with domestic online shoppers through the estimation of logit model using the data constructed based on the large-scale nationwide surveys for two years during 2016-2017. Estimation results show that there are significant differences between the direct overseas purchasers and domestic online shoppers in all aspects considered in the analysis such as demographic characteristics, shoppers buying habits, information technology using environment and behavior. On the demographic side, the characteristics of high income earners in large cities who are unmarried and with small number of households are representative of foreign direct purchasers, while domestic online shoppers are represented by either high income earning and high level educated people or unemployed adult men. In addition, having a smartphone increases the probability of using domestic online shopping malls, while it does not have a statistically significant effect on overseas direct purchases for which mobile apps are much less useful. Information search via the Internet also has a significant impact only on using domestic online shopping malls, where much more sites are accessible for the same product. Regarding the shoppers’ buying habits, overseas direct purchasers tend to buy fashionable goods while the users of domestic online shopping malls tend to search price information on the Internet prior to buying. These substantial differences between users of overseas and domestic online shopping malls suggest that separate research and business interests as well as policy approaches are needed.
