This study aims to analyze how the ideologies of ‘sex,’ ‘race,’ and ‘rule-resistance’ are presented in Exodus 1-2 and what strategies the text uses to communicate each ideology to its readers.
The analysis resulted in the following conclusions: First, the detailed record of Pharaoh’s order to kill the boys and of the activity of the females shown in the rescue of Moses is a literary device to make the appearance of ‘a man,’ Moses, which is about to be a deliverer, dramatical. This is a textual strategy to convey the male-centered ideology that salvation is eventually achieved through a man. Second, the direct contrast between Hebrew women and Egyptian women through the mouths of the midwives, Pharaoh’s silence on the answers of the midwives, the death records of not of the Hebrews but of the Egyptians, and the comment which links Moses’ consciousness of self-identity to the memory of God’s covenant to the patriarchs are all literary devices to show the superiority of the Hebrews. With this strategy, the text breaks down Pharaoh and the Egyptians who try to demonstrate their wisdom and power. Third, the text clearly shows Pharaoh’s ruling ideology under the pretext of protecting his own people for the practical benefit of securing labor through his monologue, which takes him as the speaker. The ensuing narratives, however, justify the resistance and ostracism of the Hebrews, revealing that Pharaoh’s rule is unjustified ruling violence.
This analysis could contribute to a new understanding of the Bible text as a case study that finds out what literary strategies it uses to keep or convey specific ideologies.
