The purpose of the study is to examine the mediating effect of emotional labor in the relationship between child-care teachers’ consciousness of closed-circuit television (CCTV) and burnout. The survey was conducted among 361 child-care teachers who were in charge of children aged zero to five, in daycare centers in Seoul, Incheon, and other cities in Gyeonggi Province. A total of 361 copies of the questionnaire were distributed. Of those returned, 329 copies, excluding 16 incomplete copies, were used for analysis. In this study, the following measurement tools were used: child-care teachers’ CCTV consciousness measuring tool (Lim, 2018), child-care teachers’ burnout measuring tool (Jeong, 2017), and child-care teachers’ emotional labor measuring tool (Jeong, 2015). The materials were analyzed using SPSS 24.0. The results are summarized as follows: First, positive CCTV consciousness, consciousness of the necessity of CCTV and consciousness of the security needs of CCTV of child-care teachers was negatively correlated with both emotional labor and burnout of the teachers. In contrast, negative CCTV consciousness of child-care teachers was positively correlated with both emotional labor and burnout of the teachers. Second, it was found that emotional labor partially mediated the relationship between child-care teachers’ positive consciousness of CCTV and burnout. The relationship between the child-care teachers’ negative consciousness of CCTV and burnout was fully mediated. Emotional labor partially mediated the relationship between the child-care teachers’ positive consciousness of CCTV and burnout. Meanwhile, emotional labor partially mediated the relationship between recognition of the necessity of CCTV and burnout, while fully mediating the relationship between their recognition of the security needs of CCTV and burnout. In this study, we were able to identify the relationship between child-care teachers’ consciousness of CCTV and their emotional labor and burnout, and the mediating effect of emotional labor during the process. The results of this study will serve as materials to improve child-care teachers’ consciousness about CCTV and pave the way for providing policy support for the alleviation of teachers’ emotional labor, which can be caused by their negative consciousness about CCTV.
