The Bible, the canon of Christianity, consists of sixty-six books, the total of the thirty-nine Old Testament books written in old Hebrew and the twenty-seven New Testament books written in old Greek, called Koine. The Bible is one of the world’s largest published and translated books, constantly translated and read in various languages since the Reformation. The Bible has been translated into various languages and distributed for the spread of Christianity around the world. The Westen missionaries had accomplished the Chinese translation of the Bible since Christianity was first introduced in China.
This research examines the Chinese Bible’s linguistic characteristics and vocabulary aspects, focusing on the Chinese Bible (published in 1912) translated by the Protestant missionaries in the early 20th century. The Chinese Bible, published in 1912, used a distinctly different language style from the Official Bible that was used simultaneously. Comparing two translated versions, I have arrived at the academic conclusion that there are some linguistic characteristics and vocabulary usages of the Chinese Bible one hundred years ago as following.
The linguistic style of the Chinese Bible in 1912 used both literary and colloquial language. In general vocabulary, there are many uses of monosyllabic words. In addition, it shows signs that the classical literary morphemes and vocabularies were used compared to the Official Bible. It also had a quite considerable usage of phonetic translation to indicate the names of people and the places in the Bible. In addition, it can be found that many extinct vocabularies are not used in contemporary Chinese linguistics.
