This study focused on the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments played an important role in the translation process of the Chinese Bible and the Korean Bible. When literature evangelism was not active, the Ten Commandments were loved by many Christians for their preferred text of expressing the rules on the life of a believer. I compared the Ten Commandments in Chinese Bible versions with those in Korean Bible versions to see how their interpretations were made. Their interpretations were dynamic by time periods, characters, or translation rules. The original meaning of the Ten Commandments was also differently applied in East Asian culture.
I studied the different understandings of the words in various versions. Moreover, my focus was on the differences between the Chinese Bible and the Korean Bible. It is meaningful for me as a Chinese to do a comparative study on the versions with different intentions. The question of how the Korean Bible accepted the Chinese Bible is also important for Korean scholars.
The study of the first through fourth commandments related to God shows many variations in the Bible versions. There is no particular difference from the fifth through tenth commandments related to people’s lives. The first part typically produced different interpretations of the longer and more difficult theological concepts compared to other parts. Translaters rather have to consider which words would perfectly fit in their society. which explains that the translation processes bear tremandous effort to find possibility out of impossibility.
The changes and editorial works are so important because these tasks provide continuous extensions of the Bible. It is not easy to find out exact words in the translation process. Translators just seek to find most preferable words. This process was the same even in the translation from Hebrew to Greek. There would be additions and subtractions, even alterations. Consistency and inconsistency in the translation process may be natural. Rather, translators should think about which words are best for their society. Whenever the Bible is translated into another language, there must be an effort to find the possibility out of impossibility.
