This study aimed to investigate the perceptions, practices, and demand of prospective early childhood teachers regarding media literacy. A total of 152 students attending a 4-year early childhood education department located in Gyeonggi-do participated in the study. A questionnaire was used to inquire about perceptions and practices of media literacy. First, prospective early childhood teachers’ awareness of media literacy was high overall; in particular, teachers were highly aware of the necessity of media use and critical understanding of media in early childhood education institutions. Second, as a result of examining the media literacy status of prospective early childhood teachers, more than a half of particpants heard of media literacy, but only a small number heard of related training. The satisfaction level with the training and its utilization in daily life among prospective early childhood teachers who received training was high. Third, as a result of examining the demand for revitalizing media literacy education among prospective early childhood teachers, there was a high interest in producing teaching media related to media literacy, and the majority responded that they would participate if media literacy education was provided through major subjects related to early childhood media. When the importance of media literacy is increasingly emphasized, we hope that a media literacy education program for prospective early childhood teachers will be developed based on the study results and that research will be expanded to verify its effectiveness.
