This article is try to analyze a peak wage system under debate as compared with the same system of Japan. Above all, it matters whether a peak wage system can be driven to the end as a government's plan and what factors are needed to effectively introduce it in company wage system. Even though there are many reports showing that many corporations employing the peak wage system, the figures are too various to categorize them into the wage system. Therefore in this article I will try to group various figures of a peak wage system into some types. Nowaday, Korean society is faced with very serious problems, which are an inclination to an aging society and a trend to low economic development. Furthermore they bring about the problem of an aging manpower to many corporations. Because most Korean companies have adopted a long service pay system with a retirement age rule, the phase of aging manpower is very serious issue in aspects of labor cost and personnel management to them.
Therefore some companies try to introduce new wage system, like an annual salary, an efficiency pay and a peak wage system. Furthermore KLI and KCCI actively advocate a peak wage system as an alternative pay system. MOL also expect that it can achieve restructuring inefficient pay systems, downing unemployment rate of the middle/old employees and creating job in labor market for the youth.
However it is not clear whether a peak wage system can be the direct key of such problems. Some models of peak wage systems only cut down employees' pay, it don't contribute to solve unemployment issues. Even though a peak wage system is useful to resolve economic and labor problems in the process of aging society, we have to examine closely it in legal and economic aspects.
