The notion of originality or creativity has haunted most modem writers and translators. This obsession often drives them to defy faithfulness and homage to their forerunners in an effort to move beyond the shadow their influence and create something new. Harold Bloom calls this "sickness" or obsession "the anxiety of influence." Bloom explains the relationship between the great poet (precursor) and his follower (ephebe) in terms of the Freudian analysis of the Oedipal relation between father and son: the belated poet or "ephebe," if ambitious for originality, feels the anxiety of influence.
This kind of anxiety also occupies the ambitious translator who aims at creating a new text out of the original. The ambitious writers and translators intentionally misread and mistranslate in order to erase their precursors and to become creative writers, hence achieving the aesthetics of misreading and mistranslating. This anxiety or obsession often leads to parricidal and cannibalistic metaphors.
The bipolar opposition between father (precursor) and son (follower) should be deconstructed, and develops into a dialectic relation, which in turn promises a new creation. Otherwise, the anxiety malforms the ephebe. In the field of translation studies, translation and translator have long been subordinate to the original text and author.
Fortunately many ambitious translators, such as the post-colonial translators, have tried to deconstruct the binary opposition between the original and the translation and to relocate the status of translator as creative reader/writer/translator. The research and practice of post-colonial and other translation studies provide diverse and balanced perspectives on the original (precursor) and the translation (ephebe). These efforts should be progressively made not simply to develop and broaden the field of translation studies, but also to read and translate the world issues and relations from a more dialectical, reciprocal, or objective perspective.
